Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation Is the use of electric current produced by a device to stimulate the nerves for therapeutic purposes. It covers the complete range of transcutaneous applied currents used for nerve excitation although the term is often used with a more restrictive intent, namely to describe the kind of pulses produced by portable stimulators used to treat pain. The unit is usually connected to the skin using two or more electrodes.

TENS devices available to the domestic market are used as a non-invasive nerve stimulation intended to reduce both acute and chronic pain.

It is a device that sends small electrical currents to targeted body parts. These currents are used to relieve pain. These pulses controls pain signals in the body, creating temporary or permanent relief from pain. They can control abnormally excited nerves and release endorphins.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation

Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS), also known as neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) or electromyostimulation, is the elicitation of muscle contraction using electric impulses. The impulses are generated by a device and are delivered through electrodes on the skin near to the muscles being stimulated.

EMS can build muscle, but not enough to enhance athletic performance. EMS machines stimulate muscle motor nerves rather than sensory nerve endings, the way TENS units do. Electronic muscle stimulators are used to help prevent muscle atrophy, to assist in relieving pain and to tone muscles

EMS is used for rehabilitation purposes, for instance in physical therapy in the prevention of disuse muscle atrophy which can occur for example after musculoskeletal injuries, such as damage to bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. Its stimulus fires all the motor neurons in the treated area simultaneously, creating an uncoordinated contraction, which is primarily isometric in nature. Voluntary muscular contractions, on the other hand, roll through the muscle in a wave to generate a coordinated, directed force.

Stimulation / Vibration

Electrical Stimulation is sometimes given to patients with facial palsy. The facial nerve normally emits electrical impulses to give muscles their tone and shape. When the facial nerve is damaged the muscle no longer receives these messages and as a result the muscles become weak and floppy. External electrical stimulation can try and mimic these electrical impulses and help restore muscle tone.

It should only be used under the guidance of a therapist with specialist training in the management of facial palsy. Use of electrical stimulation should be closely monitored by the therapist. Patients should not try this treatment without supervision as there are some indications that it may cause harm when used incorrectly.
